Voluma™ is another excellent Allergan product that has only been out on the market for a few years. The concept of this injectable is to provide adequate lift and volume to the tissue over the cheekbones. Like Botox™, this product has been mis-used in some obvious cases, including celebrities, where fullness and volume is added to the wrong location too far forward in the cheeks and too low below the eyelid, creating a lumpy or ball appearance to the midface that just looks wrong.

The product is actually a medical device that must be used very carefully, as it is very long-lasting and powerful. The correct goal for use of Voluma™ is over the cheekbones, particularly on the side of the face, restoring a highcheekbone look or creating one when it never existed previously. Raising the height of the cheekbones on the side of the face can create a lifting phenomena to the midface, sometimes replacing the need for naso-labial fold injections, and can also assist at the corners of the mouth via micro-lifting of the cheek due to its re-volumization.

Benefits of Voluma Injections

The aesthetic benefits are far greater than conventional nasolabial fold fillers, as like our unconventional Botox™ technique, it is completely non-obvious what is done to the face, but the result is a substantial aesthetic improvement. It also prevents bruising to the more vascular central parts of the face by restricting injection to the sides of the face where hair can cover during the first days or so after injection to hide any discoloration that can temporarily result. It also is much less painful and sensitive and the product is reported to last for up to 2 years by Allergan, the producer of this excellent product. There has been no greater innovation in the past few years than this product in my opinion when used correctly. It is also an excellent complement and in some cases an alternative to facelift surgery or revision facelift surgery, or even bariatric surgery and weightloss.

We recommend avoiding the over-use of the product and typically we prefer conservative and/or gradual use. In contrast, fat transplant to the cheeks requires purposeful over-injection (which looks terrible) due to loss of fat cells, repeat injection, and requires a donor-site and more downtime. Fat injection is also not reversible and looks unnatural in many cases I have seen.
